Validation of Clinical Classification Schemes for Predicting Stroke: Results From the National Registry of Atrial Fibrillation
Article Abstract:
Researchers have developed a stroke prediction tool that is more accurate than existing tools in predicting which patients with atrial fibrillation have the highest risk of a stroke. Atrial fibrillation occurs when the upper part of the heart begins beating very rapidly.

A risk score for predicting stroke or death in individuals with new-onset atrial fibrillation in the community: the Framingham Heart Study
Article Abstract:
The risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation depends on their age, blood pressure, history of diabetes, heart disease or a previous stroke, and whether they smoke. Doctors can assign points to all of these values and then determine an individual patient's risk of having a stroke. Patients with a high risk can take anticoagulant drugs if necessary.

Costs and effectiveness of ximelagatran for stroke prophylaxis in chronic atrial fibrillation
Article Abstract:
The study aimed to compare quality-adjusted survival and cost among 3 alternative therapies for patients with chronic atrial fibrillation, ximelagatran, warfarin, and aspirin. It concluded that assuming equal effectiveness in stroke prevention and decreased hemorrhage risk, ximelagatran is not likely to be cost-effective in patients with atrial fibrillation unless, they have a high risk of intracranial hemorrhage or a low quality of life with warfarin.
