Article Abstract:
Issues concerning the difficulties which can be faced by nurses returning to work after a career break are discussed. Returning nurses are required to complete a 15 week course, which is unpaid, before they can apply for a job in the National Health Service.

The personal experience of returning to nursing as a mature student is recounted. The need for further qualifications even if already qualified as a nurse and the government's efforts to encourage nurses into the profession are examined.
