Back in town
Article Abstract:
Tuberculosis (TB) is rife amongst the homeless and poor of New York and the number of cases in the United Kingdom looks set to increase. Symptoms include a cough, fever, night sweats, loss of weight and pleuritic pain. An chest X-ray and an examination of sputum bacteria are essential when diagnosing TB. Treatment involves giving at least three drugs initially and then two drugs later on. The drugs kill the bacteria rapidly before they can become resistant. Isoniazid, rifampicin and pyrazinamide are the preferred drugs. Ethambutol is taken after two months by some patients.
