A role for streptococcus pneumoniae in virus-associated pneumonia
Article Abstract:
A double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in 37,107 fully immunized infants in Soweto, South Africa shows that a 9-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, PncCV prevents 31% of pneumonias associated with any of seven respiratory viruses in children. A study on these data suggests that the pneumococcus has a major role in the development of pneumonia associated with these viruses.

Pneumococcal vaccination decreases atherosclerotic lesion formation: molecular mimicry between Streptococcus pneumoniae and oxidized LDL
Article Abstract:
The Ldlr (super -/-) mice with Streptococcus pneumoniae were immunized to investigate whether in vivo exposure to pneumococci can affect artherogenis. Molecular mimicry between epitopes of oxLDL and S. pneumoniae is shown which indicates that the immune responses can have beneficial effects.

Aneurysms: Leukotrienes weaken aorta from the outside
Article Abstract:
5-lipoxygenase is a key enzyme in the formation of proinflammatory leukotrienes, is expressed in polymorphonuclear leukocytes, macrophages, and mast cells. It upregulates in the macrophages of the outer layer of the aorta and promotes aneurysm formation in mice fed a high cholesterol diet.
