A study of the advisory and health promotion activity of community pharmacists
Article Abstract:
Community pharmacists are being encouraged by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society to step up their health promotion work, but a survey of pharmacists' consultations with clients shows that many health promotion opportunities are being missed. The most common complaints presented to pharmacists concerned the upper respiratory area, especially coughs, but there were few discussions about general health, even though a cough can sometimes indicate a underlying chronic disease. Pharmacists are very willing to give advice, usually spending more time over problems concerning children, but often failed to seek information which could be useful in determining how serious the symptoms were.

Health promotion departments: developing a mechanism for promoting equal opportunities in career progression
Article Abstract:
A number of issues need to be addressed when devising ways of ensuring equal opportunities in career development for health education and promotion officers. A regrading programme can look at issues such as equal promotion opportunities and improving pay, and a flexible recruitment scheme should be in operation, taking into account training and experience and giving better staff retention levels. The impact of possible compulsory registration of staff under the Society of Health Education Officers Registration Scheme is discussed.

Evaluating training for health promotion specialists: a UK case study
Article Abstract:
The Health for All (HFA) programme set up by the World Health Organisation led the East Anglian Regional Health Authority to focus directly on primary care and health promotion as the main issues to be addressed. Work on the development of health promotion in the UK has also turned to the training requirements of health promotion specialists, and this too had an influence on the East Anglian scheme. As a model for possible further schemes, it showed the need for any training to have clear aims and a relevant, flexible structure.
