A wider frame of reference
Article Abstract:
The Accident and Emergency unit, St Mary's Hospital, London, England conducted a ten week pilot study to assess the employment of an emergency nurse practitioner (ENP). ENPs may carry out treatment of minor ailments without reference to a doctor. Policies and protocols established working parameters. However, the study highlighted insufficient training, restrictions on practice, unrealistic expectations and confusion over duties as limiting factors. If these problems are addressed employment of ENPs may reduce pressure on doctors and cut patient waiting times.

Professional demands
Article Abstract:
Nurses must assert themselves as professionals if nursing is to survive as a profession. Trained nurses often find themselves doing more basic hospital chores. Clarification of the UKCC's conduct code, the function of nursing management and the authority granted to nurses because of their special knowledge skills is necessary. Project 2000 courses participants must demonstrate that their training expense is justified by proving themselves to be more valuable than health care assistants.

An approach to minor trauma
Article Abstract:
Wound management policy should be used only as a guideline when treating children's trauma wounds and each case should be treated individually. Wounds seen in accident and emergency departments need carefully worked out standards of care, taking into account their special needs. Suggested policies for wound cleansing and debridement, temporary dressing, decontamination and follow-up treatment are presented.
