AAMC: medical education funding cuts threaten research
Article Abstract:
Managed care and reduced revenue from funding programs have threatened the viability of medical research and the medical colleges that provide that research. Academic medical centers, such as those included in the Association of American Medical Colleges, are seen as too costly, their function as innovators and researchers overlooked. The significance of research in teaching hospitals and medical colleges must be emphasized to the federal government.

HIV patients now can be candidates for organ transplants
Article Abstract:
AIDS patients are now more likely to become candidates for organ transplants due to new combination therapies and an expanded donor program. Protease inhibitors and antiretroviral agents allow some AIDS patients to live longer lives, increasing their opportunities to receive donor organs. AIDS patients also have access to organs from donors who do not meet transplant standards for the general population.
