Senator: cut Medicare costs with new software
Article Abstract:
Iowa Senator Tom Harkin has proposed replacing current Medicare claims-auditing software with a commercial vendor's version. His suggestion was prompted by a General Accounting Office study of 200,000 claims that found the new software caught overbilling errors on 8% of the claims that had already been processed by Medicare's software. He claims the software could save $5 billion over 5 years, and has proposed that medicare carriers be given 6 months to begin using the new system.

Private sector provides no road map for Medicare MSAs
Article Abstract:
Congress by mid-September 1995 will begin debating the issue of using medical savings accounts (MSA) in the Medicare program. MSAs have been controversial since they were first introduced a few years ago, and not many people use MSAs. Traditionally, MSAs are paired with high-deductible health insurance policies, in which the insured uses deposits in the MSA to pay for medical services. MSA do not have tax advantages of other health plans.
