AMA backs 'consumer choice' goals, warns against rationing
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association feels that consumer choice national health insurance proposals should be pursued. These proposals should seek to affect greater cost-containment and individual responsibility in the selection of insurance coverage. However, rationing or lowering the quality of health care should not be part of any of the considerations.

The Resident Physicians Section (RPS) of the American Medical Association is a strong advocator of residents' interests. The resident physician organization is the largest in the country, boasting nearly 40,000 members. The RPS Governing Council has been credited with increasing resident representation in the accreditation process.

To AMA leader assails Gephardt's 'competition' plan
Article Abstract:
James H. Sammons, MD, spoke out against the Congressional bill concerning unrestricted competition in the practice of medicine. Richard Gephardt introduced the bill in the House of Representatives and feels it would contain medical costs. However, Dr. Sammons feels it would be detrimental to quality health care delivery.
