AMA's violence report card: nation gets poor grades again
Article Abstract:
Violence remains a serious problem in the US, according to the American Medical Association's (AMA) National Report Card on Violence. The AMA Task Force on Violence gave the US an overall grade of "D" for the second consecutive year. Grades for virtual and family violence improved slightly while public violence and sexual assault grades remained unchanged. Overcrowded prisons, insufficient rehabilitation programs and overburdened law enforcement and legal system are contributing to increasing drug, gun, gang and civil violence.

The domestic violence issue: hear our voices
Article Abstract:
Many incidents of domestic violence could be prevented if health care workers, particularly physicians, questioned suspected victims in a routine but nonthreatening and caring way. As many as 35% of women visiting hospital emergency rooms are suffering effects of ongoing abuse, but as few as 5% of them are identified as victims of domestic violence. Surgeon General Antonia Novello says that health care providers should ask about marital problems and psychological and physical abuse, and they should make appropriate referrals.
