Accuracy and costs of rapid human immunodeficiency virus testing technologies in rural hospitals in Zambia
Article Abstract:
The HIV Dipstick test appears to be accurate and appropriate for HIV screening in rural laboratories in Zambia, Africa. The HIV Dipstick test allows low-cost HIV testing to be performed by unsophisticated health facilities. Researchers evaluated the test in 1,500 clinic patients, and determined that 53% were HIV-infected. Most tested patients had symptoms suggestive of HIV infection. Parallel testing of samples revealed that the Dipstick test was extremely accurate, but some clinic counselors were dissatisfied with the testing procedure required to use the Dipstick test.

Prenatal human immunodeficiency virus and sexually transmitted disease screening: getting the message across
Article Abstract:
It is not clear which methods can best convince physicians to test all of their pregnant patients for HIV. In 1995, The US Public Health Service recommended universal screening after a study showed that zidovudine could substantially reduce the transmission of the virus from mother to child. However, surveys of physicians have found that many do not test their pregnant patients, or only test those perceived to be at high risk. This problem is compounded by the fact that many physicians do not assess their patients' risk factors.
