Several tools are available to help diagnose depression
Article Abstract:
Physicians can diagnose major depressive disorders by screening their family histories and looking for the nine symptoms of clinical depression: dysphoric moods, suicidal ideation, diminished interest in fun activities, guilt, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, changes in appetite or weight, psychomotor agitation, and sleep disturbances. Not all patients who are sad are depressed, and depression may occur in conjunction with other illness, such as Parkinson's, HIV infection or strokes.

The importance of screening for domestic violence in all women
Article Abstract:
Clinicians should realize that domestic violence crosses all socioeconomic lines and screening for abuse can be hampered if it is continually perceived as a problem involving only poor families. Domestic violence is more prevalent than many believe and health care screening practices should recognize that many women from high socioeconomic levels are abused. A change in typical battered women profiles and universal screening practices is a necessary step in eliminating family violence.
