Article Abstract:
The UK Department of Health's Report of the Chief Medical Officer's Expert Group on the Sleeping Position of Infants and Cot Deaths, 1993, shows that there were 456 cot deaths in 1992, vs 912 in 1991. It advises the profession about the relationship between cot deaths and parents' smoking, the thermal environment, and breast feeding, as well as the sleeping position of infants. Despite the Back to Sleep Campaign launched in November 1991, when guidance was issued on the relationship between the sleeping position and cot death, there has not been a significant change in medical practice. The importance of the medical profession's influence on parental attitudes towards child-rearing is emphasised.
