Easing the pressure
Article Abstract:
The importance of preventing the development of pressure sores is now widely recognised, both for the well-being of the patient and because of the high costs involved in treating pressure sores once they have been allowed to develop. There is a wide range of pressure-relieving equipment available, but its effectiveness has not been properly evaluated, and it is therefore difficult for medical staff to choose the most appropriate equipment. In the case of palliative care environments, there may not be time to heal a pressure sore, but pressure-relieving equipment can certainly make the patient more comfortable.

Pressure-sore prevention policies
Article Abstract:
Bed sores are most common in long-stay orthopaedic, geriatric or trauma patients who do not receive twenty-four hour nursing. Monitoring, treating and preventing bed sores may be costing the UK National Health Service up to 200 million pounds sterling per year, according to a Department of Health survey. Bed sore management is imperative to ensuring patients are given the best chance of full recovery while keeping unnecessary pain to a minimum. Patient nutrition and mobility are important factors in reducing the occurrence of bed sores.
