Age-related macular degeneration
Article Abstract:
Macular degeneration occurs when the retina in the center of the visual field begins to degenerate. Because this is the area where vision is clearest, people with macular degeneration can no longer see faces, drive, or read. Treatments include laser photocoagulation therapy, photodynamic therapy, and interferon alpha-2a. Investigational treatments include microsurgery, external-beam radiation, and thalidomide. The best treatment is to prevent the condition and lasers and dietary supplements may be beneficial.

Macular degeneration
Article Abstract:
Macular degeneration is a large group of conditions that are collectively the most common cause of irreversible vision loss in the developed world and many forms of macular degeneration have a considerable genetic component. A lot of progress is made in understanding the genes involved while in future, genetic testing might allow specific preventive treatments to be administered to individuals at risk, decades before the disease would normally become noticeable.
