Alcohol exposure and the fetus
Article Abstract:
The minimal diagnostic criteria for fetal alcohol syndrome were formulated based on clinical features observed from 245 cases. The criteria included growth retardation, craniofacial features and neurodevelopmental problems. Pathogenic mechanisms were attributed to factors responsible for the final outcome of the fetus which include ethnic differences in maternal abilityto metabolize alcohol and the variable sensitivity of fetuses to teratogens.

Detection of the fetus at risk
Article Abstract:
A study was done to determine the role of folic acid supplementation or multivitamins on the prevention of neural tube defects in patients who had an affected pregnancy. Results show that the multivitamins show no protective effect but folic acid supplementation gave a 72% protective effect against a recurrence of a neural tube defect. Therefore it was recommended that pregnant women should receive folic acid supplementation.

Role of adenosine in regulation of brain temperature in fetal sheep
Article Abstract:
Adenosine does not appear to play a major role in regulating brain temperature when oxygen levels drop. In a study of fetal lambs, brain temperature decreased during low oxygen levels despite the use of a drug that blocks adenosine.
