Female predominance and transmission distortion in the long-QT syndrome
Article Abstract:
A retrospective study investigates the transmission and distribution of mutated alleles in several families with the long-QT syndrome to clarify whether the autosomal dominant mutations follow classical mendelian inheritance or whether female predominance could be influenced by an unbalanced sex ratio in the population carrying the deleterious allele. Results reveal the unbalanced transmission of the alleles causing the long-QT syndrome types 1 and 2 according to mendelian inheritance and show that in maternal transmission, daughters are favored.

Use and cost effectiveness of smoking-cessation services under four insurance plans in a health maintenance organization
Article Abstract:
Insurance plans that fully cover smoking cessation programs are more likely to be cost-effective. Researchers compared the cost, usage and effectiveness of full coverage or reduced coverage for smoking cessation programs. The use of smoking cessation plans was higher by smokers who were fully covered compared to those partly covered. In addition, about four times as many smokers in the fully covered plans would quit smoking per year. However, the cost of full coverage was higher.
