Alcohol use/HCV infection independent predictors of cirrhosis
Article Abstract:
Alcohol intake and hepatitis C virus infection can be determinants of symptomatic liver cirrhosis independently of one another. This was found in a study conducted by Giovanni Corrao and Sarino Arico, providing further evidence that the two are independent risk factors of cirrhosis. Data from two hospital-based case-control studies in Italy were analyzed, which included 285 cirrhotic patients and 417 patients admitted for acute diseases unrelated to alcohol as controls. However, the coexistence of HCV infection in patients with excessive alcohol intake was found to increase the risk of cirrhosis.

Consensus interferon useful in relapsers/nonresponders
Article Abstract:
Patients with chronic hepatitis C who have either failed to respond to previous interferon treatment or relapsed following therapy can be retreated with consensus interferon (CIFN). The first interferon that has shown reasonable efficacy, CIFN is safe yet effective for both nonresponders and relapsers. According to researchers from the Consensus Interferon Study Group, relapsers posted a 58% sustained hepatitis C virus RNA response rate at 48 weeks of treatment while those who did not respond to previous therapy showed a sustained response rate of 13% for the same period.
