Annual screening reveals tumors too late for treatment
Article Abstract:
Hemophiliacs with chronic hepatitis C are at great risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This was confirmed in a study conducted by F. Tradati and colleagues at Italy's University of Milan, which assessed the risk factors and the natural history of HCC as well as chances of early detection and curative treatment following annual screening. Results showed that liver cancer is an important cause of death in anti-HIV-negative and anti-HIV-positive hemophiliacs with chronic hepatitis C. Hemophiliacs with cirrhosis and elevated alpha-fetoprotein level are at high risk of liver cancer, with those infected late in life at greater risk.

Nitric oxide is produced in vivo
Article Abstract:
Nitric oxide (NO) production in the early stages of leishmaniasis is effective in eliminating Leishmania parasites. Leishmaniasis is an endemic parasitosis caused by species of the genus Leishmania. Once the parasite burden becomes too high, however, increased production of NO and derived oxidants apparently aggravates the inflammatory process and contributes to the occurrence of secondary infections. These were found by Selma Giorgio and colleagues at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas in Brazil, when they monitored NO formation during the course of L. amazonensis infection in mice tissues.
