Alendronate for the prevention and treatment of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis
Article Abstract:
The drug alendronate appears to prevent bone loss in patients who take corticosteroids. Researchers randomly assigned 477 men and women on corticosteroids to take 5 or 10 milligrams of alendronate or a placebo daily. Bone density at the hip and lumbar spine was measured at one, two, three and four years. Bone density in those taking alendronate increased two percent or more in the spine and one percent or more in the hip. Those taking placebo lost bone density in those areas. Alendronate reduced the risk of vertebral fractures by 40%.

Ten years' experience with alendronate for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women
Article Abstract:
The results of a multinational randomized, double-blind study, in which postmenopausal women with osteoporosis were treated with alendronate for unto 10 years, are reported. The discontinuation of alendronate resulted in a gradual loss of effect, as measured by bone density and biochemical markers of bone remodeling.
