All together now: teamwork creates a positive safety culture
Article Abstract:
Management and labor representatives working with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), can enhance a company's safety culture. This teamwork approach has worked for ConAgra Inc, a food-processing giant, and Lockheed Martin's Ocean, Radar, and Sensor Systems. The method requires the companies concerned to achieve the OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) within five years for their plants. To attain the VPP, the companies need to conduct one to three safety-training sessions a month, and safety audits, and put in place disciplinary measures for employees and managers.

Incentive programs: is safety the ultimate prize?
Article Abstract:
The effectiveness of incentive programs is being debated as there is a danger that these programs may discourage injury reporting and breed fear of disincentives. Despite the debate, employers still see incentive programs as the most effective way to reduce injury rates and instill safety consciousness in the workforce while the Occupational Safety and Health Administration continues to support these programs.

Companies are finding that systematic back injury protection programs translate to fewer back injuries and higher success rates.
