Looking a gift horse in the mouth: corporate gifts supporting life sciences research
Article Abstract:
Many life scientists receive gifts from the biosciences industry and these gifts may come with certain expectations. Researchers surveyed 2,167 life sciences faculty at 50 US universities about the type of gifts they had received from industry. Forty-three percent had received industry gifts in the previous three years, including materials, funding, equipment, trips to meetings and support for students. Two-thirds said the gift had been important to their research. In 32% of the cases, the company providing the gift wanted to preview articles before publication and in 19% of the cases, the company expected patent ownership of any products produced.

The social missions of academic health centers
Article Abstract:
Academic health centers deserve public funding because they offer services that a competitive healthcare market would not sufficiently supply. Academic centers provide teaching and clinical training of new physicians, which raises the cost of patient care. They are primary sources of medical research, AIDS treatment, trauma and burn services, care of the poor and other programs that are expensive yet valuable to society. Public policy should protect these social missions, yet promote competition with other hospitals for services that can be paid for by patients and insurers.
