All you need to know about clinical effectiveness
Article Abstract:
Research in nursing practice has found a number of differences in the way patients are being treated. The UK Department of Health (DoH) are trying to tackle the problem by issuing information packs on clinical effectiveness to all nurses. The idea of the information packs for nurses came from the professional standards set out by the DoH in 1993. The pack contains 10 information sheets dealing with specific areas of expertise. It was considered necessary to tackle the variation in quality of care because of the potential waste of resources and the effect on individual patients.

Setting new boundaries
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom Central Council's 'Code of Professional Conduct,' 1992 and publication 'The Scope of Professional Practice,' 1992 replace extended role guidance for nurses. Nurses will be accountable for providing a range of health care functions dependent on their skills and experience. The removal of barriers between medical and nursing care should improve patient care and increase nurses' job satisfaction. However, deficient support services should not undermine nurses' increased responsibility.

Nursing the nation better: Just how full a part can nurses, midwives and health visitors play in contributing to the strategies outlined in Our Healthier Nation?
Article Abstract:
The green paper Our Healthier Nation suggests a national contract for health setting out mutual responsibilities at national, local and individual levels. The priorities are cancers, coronary heart disease, mental health and accidents, and the plans are complemented by the recent white paper The New NHS: Modern and Dependable. Although the nation's health is not only the responsibility of the health services, there is a clear role for health, and opportunities for nursing.
