Alzheimer's disease
Article Abstract:
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by global impairment of cognitive functions that impair social and occupational functioning of the affected individual. Risk factors include genetic makeup, educational level, gender, and head trauma. Heavy metals and toxins are potential risks but supporting data for these are still lacking. Therapeutic regimens currently available are designed to alleviate depression and behavioral disorders. Studies are now being done to elucidate the relationship between amyloid deposition and the functions of the apolipoprotein-E genes in relevance to AD.

Did Socrates have the sacred disease?
Article Abstract:
There are numerous speculations based on historical records suggesting that Socrates suffered from epilepsy. Socrates's divine voice, his unpredictable and abstract behavior and likely ecstatic encounters are symptomatic of temporal lobe epilepsy. This malady is further suggested by the presence since infancy of an auditory aura, while a peculiar physique pinpoints a definite congenial deformity. Based on these observations, it is very likely that Socrates suffered from the so called sacred disease, or rather from a complex partial seizure disorder.
