Alzheimer's disease in women
Article Abstract:
Alzheimer's disease may affect more women than men, and consequently be a health concern of aging women. Women with Alzheimer's disease may experience language and psychiatric dysfunction more than men. The diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease may be considered definite if brain biopsies or autopsies show plaque on nerves or tangles of nerve fibers. Neither the cause nor a cure have been identified for the disease. Treatment involves emotional support and counseling for patients and family members, and the drug tacrine may halt intellectual decline. Estrogen may help to prevent or treat Alzheimer's in postmenopausal women.
