Puerperal infection after cesarean delivery: evaluation of a standardized protocol
Article Abstract:
Women with endometrial infection after a cesarean section should be treated with clindamycin and gentamicin, followed by ampicillin or vancomycin if they do not respond to the first two antibiotics. In a study of 322 women with endometrial infection following a cesarean, this treatment cured 94%.

Umbilical cord plasma interleukin-6 concentrations in preterm infants and risk of neonatal morbidity
Article Abstract:
Evaluation of the association between umbilical cord interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels and neonatal morbidity in infants born at less than 32 weeks' gestation was studied. Elevated IL-6 levels were associated with an increased risk for Systematic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in such infants.

Amniotic fluid interleukin-6: correlation with upper genital tract microbial colonization and gestational age in women delivered after spontaneous labor versus indicated delivery
Article Abstract:
Amniotic fluid levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) may serve as a marker for intrauterine infection. IL-6 mediates inflammation. Placental tissues and amniotic fluid were cultured for a variety of pathogens in 269 women who had a cesarean section with intact fetal membranes. This allowed the retrieval of uncontaminated samples. Women were grouped by whether they had spontaneous labor or induced labor. Women having spontaneous labors had IL-6 levels seven times that of women in the induced labor group. Among women having spontaneous labor, amniotic fluid levels were almost six times greater in women delivered before 34 weeks gestation. No relationship was found among women in the induced labor group. IL-6 levels were elevated in women with positive cultures, especially so among women with spontaneous labor. These data suggest that IL-6 plays a role in the onset of preterm labor in women with intrauterine infections.
