Amyloid A4 protein and its precursor in Down's syndrome and Alzheimer's disease
Article Abstract:
Amyloid fibrils are deposited in the brain of patients with Alzheimer's disease and in younger persons with Down's syndrome. Levels of the amyloid precursor (PreA4) were measured in the blood of patients with Down's syndrome, patients with Alzheimer's disease and normal elderly controls. Deposition of amyloid began in patients with Down's syndrome 50 years earlier than it began in normal aging subjects, although the deposition rate was the same. The authors conclude that overexpression of the gene for amyloid may lead to increased levels of amyloid depositions in Down's syndrome because increased levels of amyloid precursor are not present in that disorder.

Acute renal failure - the promise of new therapies
Article Abstract:
Research on drug therapies for acute tubular necrosis may improve the prognosis of this form of kidney failure. A 1997 study of a drug called anaritide found that this synthetic form of atrial natriuretic peptide improved kidney function in a group of patients with acute tubular necrosis who had reduced urine output. Other researchers are studying chemicals that block integrins, which may be responsible for damaging the kidneys. Insulin-like growth factor I may allow the kidney cells to regenerate, restoring their function.
