Urinary tract disorders in patients with chronic granulomatous disease
Article Abstract:
Chronic granulomatous disease is characterized by the formation of granulomas (clumps of inflammatory cells) caused by repeated bacterial or fungal infections. It is thought to be an inherited genetic defect carried by mothers and passed on to sons, or acquired from both carrier parents. Patients having this disease have a high incidence of urinary tract disorders and infections. To determine the frequency of urinary tract diseases, 25 patients with granulomatous disease were examined. Urinary tract disorders were found in 12 male patients under age 22 years. Hydroureteronephrosis (blockage in the ureter preventing the flow of urine) was found in six of these patients; one patient required surgery. The remaining six patients had difficulty urinating or lesions on the genitals. It is suggested that urinary tract evaluation be performed routinely in patients with chronic granulomatous disease, even in the absence of symptoms, and that antibiotic therapy be prescribed when urinary tract difficulties are present.
