An Ancient Nation Braces to Fight AIDS
Article Abstract:
The Ethiopian government should set up core teams in every town and village who can learn about HIV prevention and treatment at regional seminars and bring that information back to their community. The country began an AIDS control program in 1986, but it fell apart in 1991 when the centralized, military regime was replaced with regional, democratic rule. According to a 1997 estimate, about 2.5 million Ethiopians are HIV-infected. This would rank Ethiopia third in the world according to the percentage of the population affected by HIV.
