An assessment of health and lifestyle surveys undertaken by health boards in Scotland (1986-95)
Article Abstract:
Representatives from 15 health boards in Scotland were asked to give information about health and lifestyle surveys conducted between 1986-95 to find out why they were carried out, how much they cost and whether they had been useful. Only two boards had not carried out a survey during this period and the cost varied from 6,000 pounds sterling to 40,000 pounds. The data collected from the surveys was used for a range of purposes, including planning and monitoring health education programmes. The surveys were deemed to be useful but there were few policy changes afterwards.

Computer system failure: planning disaster recovery
Article Abstract:
Nurse managers must be familiar with their facility's disaster recovery plan (DRP) in the event of a computer system failure. This can be caused by earthquakes, fires, floods and power outages. Risk analysis will identify which components are susceptible to failure and what measures can be taken to allow employees to resume work. The DRP should be tested and updated periodically.

An assessment of procedures: discharge planning
Article Abstract:
A study of patient discharge procedures found a lack of information on the home environment and the previous level of functioning, and there was no evidence of information given to patients. Some respondents discussed discharge with the nurses and all ware aware of their injury and surgery, although the period of convalescence was not indicated.
