An interactive 24-h recall technique for assessing the adequacy of trace mineral intakes of rural Malawian women: its advantages and limitations
Article Abstract:
Analysis of the data using an interactive 24-hour recall technique for assessing the adequacy of trace elements in the dietary intake of 60 rural pregnant Malawian women shows a large proportion at risk of inadequate energy, protein, calcium, iron and zinc intakes while magnesium and copper intakes were found sufficient in both the recall and weighed record methods. The fair to moderate assessment of energy intakes and the poor inter-technique classification agreement for intakes per day indicate that the technique can be used to classify persons according to dietary patterns only.

Complementary foods for infant feeding in developing countries: their nutrient adequacy and improvement
Article Abstract:
In many developing countries, plant-based gruels are fed to infants as early as one month of age when they supplant breast milk, causing the infant to lose the benefits of the nutrients in breast milk. A new study investigates the energy and nutrient capability of 23 plant-based complementary foods used in India, Africa, the Philippines, Thailand and Papua New Guinea. It is shown that such foods meet the total daily requirements for protein, copper and thiamin, but not for iron, calcium and zinc.
