Anaemia is a reduction in the concentration of haemoglobin in peripheral blood, sometimes accompanied by a reduction red-cell mass. Iron deficiency anaemia is the most common nutritional deficiency throughout the world, common in infants, adolescents, women during their reproductive years, pregnant women and the elderly. Clinical signs depend on the severity, but tiredness, lethargy and apathy are common, and a patient's history should alert a nurse to the possibility of anaemia. Deficiency anaemia can often be treated with a combination of nutritional supplements and diet and health education. Blood transfusion may be required for sever anaemia.
