Meal priorities
Article Abstract:
Staff at St. Albans and Hemel Hempstead NHS Trust took a great interest in the nutrition of patients as a result of the 'Hungry in Hospital?' document published in 1997. They established a clinical audit project to look at nursing practice at meal times. The audit found that nursing assessment of patients' nutritional needs was inadequate and that patients were not fed in accordance with their needs. A second audit, carried out after changes were made, showed that nutritional care had greatly improved.

Reflections on breaking news of a family death
Article Abstract:
Informing relatives of the death of a loved one is a difficult task for nurses. Their attitude can have a great effect on the response of those to whom they give the bad news. The fears of the nurse and the attitude of the relatives have to be taken into consideration. It is advisable to find a quiet room to talk to relatives, prepare them for the bad news and use clear, simple language. Religious and cultural requirements have to be taken into consideration after a death.
