Analysis of labor and delivery workload
Article Abstract:
A staffing method for nurses in a labor and delivery (L&D) department based on patient volume patterns has been developed and tested. Patient volume was analyzed for 56 shifts sampled from day, evening, and night shifts over a 3-month period in an L&D department. Staffing adjustments were made to match the nursing needs of the observed patient volume patterns. Other staffing balancing strategies included scheduling elective cesarean deliveries at off-peak times and mobilizing a temporary and on-call crew.

Census variation staffing
Article Abstract:
A nursing staff model called census variation staffing (CVS) appears to have been successful. The CVS model calls for changing the nursing staff numbers on a shift by shift basis according to the number of hospitalized patients and their nursing needs. A 315-bed hospital implemented this program for four years resulting in an annual average savings to the hospital of $485,100. Patients reported receiving quality care during this time period.

A "bottom-line" approach to nurse staffing
Article Abstract:
A nursing staff management model which offers enhanced team building, better patient care, and cost reduction is presented. The model involves evaluating productivity standards for staff units and determining staffing needs by shift or department. Data from the model can be easily collected and used by personnel and management.
