Article Abstract:
A nurse gained satisfaction from helping a cerebrovascular accident patient communicate. She accurately assessed the patient's abilities through observation. Although the patient was alert she was struggling to communicate. A chart showing words and pictures helped establish needs. The nurse also encouraged the patient's involvement in decision-making. A friendship developed between nurse and patient that enriched both lives. However, the patient did not recover from a further stroke six months later.
