Antenatal depiction of fetal digits with three-dimensional ultrasonography
Article Abstract:
Three-dimensional ultrasound scans may more easily identify fetuses at risk for bone deformities than routine two-dimensional ultrasound scans. The arms and fingers of 70 normal fetuses and two with skeletal dysplasia were examined with two-dimensional and three-dimensional ultrasound scans. Doctors could examine all of a fetus' fingers more often with three-dimensional ultrasound than two-dimensional ultrasound. Between 20 and 23 weeks of pregnancy was the best time for complete visualization. The parents of the two deformed fetuses could better understand the deformity after seeing the three-dimensional scan.

Fetal lung volume determination by three-dimensional ultrasonography
Article Abstract:
Three-dimensional ultrasound scans appear to be an effective way to estimate lung volume in fetuses. These measurements may be useful in evaluating fetal development or possible complications. The lungs of 78 fetuses were scanned with three-dimensional ultrasound. Measurements were repeated an average of 36 days later. Lung volumes ranged from 2.8 milliliters (ml) early in pregnancy to 148 ml before delivery. The lung volume calculation was made by subtracting the heart volume from the chest volume.
