Antibacterial treatment of gastric ulcers associated with Helicobacter pylori
Article Abstract:
A one-week course of antibacterial therapy may heal stomach ulcers associated with Helicobacter (H.) pylori infection. A study of 100 patients with stomach ulcers and H. pylori infection compared the antibacterial treatment to that of an acid-suppressing drug, omeprazole. One week of antibacterial therapy with bismuth subcitrate, tetracycline, and metronidazole resulted in healing of most of the ulcers, with a low rate of recurrence by one year. Treatment with omeprazole alone produced a lower rate of healing, but when combined with the antibacterial therapy, resulted in a much faster rate of healing. The findings point to H. pylori as the causal agent in stomach and intestinal ulcers. The presence of H. pylori at one year correlated strongly with the recurrence of ulcers.
