Physicians, hospitals unite to meet reform head-on
Article Abstract:
Physicians are beginning to use practice-pattern analysis and outcomes statistics to identify ways to cut medical costs. For example, at the Orlando Regional Health System, which tracks practice patterns, it was discovered that one physician prescribed the most expensive antibiotic for every case of pneumonia. He switched to a less expensive, equally effective drug and saved $200 per each day of treatment. Physicians are especially interested in lowering their hospital costs because other doctors look at the data when making referrals and because the public can also obtain the information.

Doctors rescue hospital in unusual bankruptcy decision
Article Abstract:
The bankrupt Hyde Park Hospital in Chicago has been awarded by a judge to a physician-led investment group. The group bid $2.4 million for the hospital, which will be renamed Doctors Hospital of Hyde Park. The hospital will continue its mission as a community hospital and will keep all its former employees on staff. Another $2.4 million will probably be needed to upgrade the hospital and finance a lucrative specialty niche such as a diabetes center.
