Appetite for change
Article Abstract:
Research findings on malnourishment amongst hospital patients prompted a nutrition support nurse to examine the regime on her own ward, and to look for opportunities to improve it. The investigation led to the development of a nutritional status assessment strategy. The ward also began supplying mid-meal snacks when they noted that the 40% wastage level at mealtimes led to a daily calorie intake of only 840 calories. Finally, the ward began using its own cook and kitchen. The cook meets patients and prepares meals they request at the times, and in the quantities, they dictate.

Starved of attention
Article Abstract:
An accident victim whose condition was exacerbated by being impaled by a spike above his anus, was helped in his recovery by a cook at the clinical nutrition unit of Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham, UK, after he became very weak and depressed. The case showed that medical staff had not initially taken the nutritional needs of the victim into consideration and that nutritional needs are an important part of patient care.
