Reducing mother-to-infant transmission of HIV - the door remains open
Article Abstract:
There may be many ways to reduce the chance that an HIV-infected woman will transmit HIV to her newborn infant, but it is not clear how many women will be tested or treated. A 1994 study found that zidovudine taken during pregnancy and labor could reduce the risk of transmission. Newer drugs have been developed to fight HIV infection that could supplement zidovudine. However, all HIV-positive pregnant women would have to be identified and some might refuse treatment. So far there is no single policy to identify and treat all women and infants at risk.

Africa's HIV transmission laws based on questionable science
Article Abstract:
Sub-Saharan African countries are using various strategies to reduce the spread of HIV. Uganda has proposed a law that would criminalize knowingly transmitting HIV to another person, but critics have warned that the laws have ignored the fact that they might not have the resources to perform the genetic analysis required to distinguish the innocent from the guilty.

Development of an in vitro organ culture model to study transmission of HIV-1 in the female genital tract
Article Abstract:
Researchers describe a tissue culture taken from squamous cervical tissue to study the transmission of HIV-1 in the female genital tract. It can be used to determine cell-free and cell-associated HIV transmission and to determine how the genotypic and phenotypic properties of HIV affect transmission.
