Assessing dentin color changes from nightguard vital bleaching
Article Abstract:
Tooth bleaching preparations appear to bleach dentin as well as enamel. Dentin is the inside part of the tooth and enamel is the outer part of the tooth. Some dentists believe that tooth bleaching preparations only bleach the enamel, or outer part of the tooth. Researchers cut extracted teeth up into sections that exposed the dentin and then applied a 10% carbamide peroxide gel to the sections. Photos of the sections were digitized and examined by a computer program that could detect changes in color. The bleach lightened the dentin and the enamel.

Internal bleaching: long-term outcomes and complications
Article Abstract:
More research is needed to find an appropriate technique to bleach teeth treated with a root canal. The bleaching agent is usually applied internally. The most common agent used is 30% hydrogen peroxide. However, despite its short-term success, only 35% to 50% of teeth benefit from the treatment over the long-term. In addition, the hydrogen peroxide can damage the root, which can cause loss of the tooth. A sodium perborate solution appears to be as effective as peroxide without the severe side effects.

ADA supports vital tooth bleaching - but look for the seal
Article Abstract:
Dentists should look for and recommend tooth bleaching preparations that have been approved by the American Dental Association (ADA). Tooth bleaching has become very popular with the public and many dentists are willing to perform aesthetic procedures. The ADA has prepared pamphlets on tooth bleaching and sponsored the development of guidelines that manufacturers must follow. The association also reviews all advertisements for tooth bleaching preparations that are published in its journal.
