Assessing the effectiveness of antiretroviral adherence interventions: Using marginal structural models to replicate the findings of randomized controlled trials
Article Abstract:
The implementation of marginal structural models (MSM) method is reviewed to illustrate with a theoretic data example in which MSM are used to estimate the effect of a behavioral intervention on adherence to antiretroviral therapy. MSM provide a powerful and broadly applicable tool, which could be implemented to estimate causal effect of a proposed adherence intervention including continuous and multicomponent interventions and time-to-event or binary outcomes.

Multiple validated measures of adherence indicate high levels of adherence to generic HIV antiretroviral therapy in a resource-limited setting
Article Abstract:
The association between various adherence measures and their effect on viral load suppression in antiretroviral-naive Ugandans initiating Triomune therapy, a generic coformulation of lamivudine, stavudine, and nevirapine administered as 1 pill twice a day, was evaluated. Valid adherence measurement is very necessary for fully optimizing HIV treatment outcomes in resource-poor settings.

Discontinuation and modification of highly active antiretroviral therapy in HIV-infected Ugandans
Article Abstract:
The prevalence discontinuation and modification of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) among sub-Saharan African population is estimated and factors associated with these phenomena are identified. The major reason for discontinuation of HAART is the drug cost which also affects the antiretroviral therapy programs.
