Article Abstract:

They should know which organized sports require mouth guards and what type of mouth protection is appropriate according to the individual needs of the patient. They should be prepared to evaluate and treat patients with traumatic facial and dental injuries on an emergency basis. They may wish to offer services as team dentists, and they should lobby for the use of mouth guards in high-risk sports. More research is needed into the types and frequencies of injuries associated with specific sports and into the degree of effectiveness of the various protective products on the market. Finally, dental schools should teach required courses on sports dentistry.
