Abortion, breast cancer, and epidemiology
Article Abstract:
A large Danish study has found no association between abortion and the risk of breast cancer. The 1996 study used population registries to survey the entire female population of Denmark and also adjusted for other risk factors for breast cancer. The risk of breast cancer was no higher in the women who had had an abortion compared to those who never had an abortion. Previous studies have used telephone surveys, but many women are reluctant to reveal that they have had an abortion. The Danish study found that women who had an abortion late in their pregnancy had a higher risk of breast cancer but the reason for this is unknown.

Putting the risk of breast cancer in perspective
Article Abstract:
Most women probably have a low risk of breast cancer, particularly if they are young. Many women have probably heard the common statistic that one out of every nine women will develop breast cancer. However, this is the risk for any woman who lives to be 85. In younger women, the risk is much less. In any decade of life, the risk is never greater than one in 34. The number of deaths due to breast cancer is less than 20% of all deaths, regardless of age. Even older women are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease than breast cancer.
