Bacterial colonization of the vagina during pregnancy in four ethnic groups
Article Abstract:
Rates of colonization with various vaginal bacteria may vary significantly among women of different ethnic backgrounds. Vaginal and upper reproductive tract infections may cause preterm delivery. Researchers analyzed vaginal cultures from 13,747 women of various ethnic groups for a variety of infectious organisms. Asian-Pacific Islander women had the lowest rates of infection with chlamydia, gonorrhea, Bacteroides sp., and bacterial vaginosis, while black women had the highest rates. White women had somewhat higher rates of infection than did Asian women, and Hispanic women had slightly higher rates than whites. The significantly higher rate of vaginal infection in black women may explain the higher preterm birth rate among blacks, which is two to three times higher than the preterm birth rate among whites.

Pharmacokinetics of oral valacyclovir and acyclovir in late pregnancy
Article Abstract:
Acyclovir therapy was compared to the acyclovir prodrug valacyclovir in pregnant women with a history of genital herpes simplex infection. Pharmacokinetic profiles were established after the 36th week of pregnancy, the onset of drug therapy. Ten women who took a daily dose of 1,000 mg of valacyclovir had higher concentrations of the drug in their blood than the ten women who received 1,200 mg of acyclovir. Overall, valacyclovir appeared to be non-toxic and was well tolerated.
