Clinical and biologic activity of an estrogenic herbal combination (PC-SPES) in prostate cancer
Article Abstract:
An herbal preparation that is sometimes used by men with prostate cancer appears to have properties similar to estrogen. Researchers tested the herbal preparation PC-SPES in yeast, female mice and in eight men with prostate cancer. The compound caused changes in the yeast and the mice similar to estrogen. It lowered blood levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in all eight men and lowered blood levels of testosterone in six men. Thus, the herbs could be useful in treating prostate cancer in conjunction with traditional treatments. However, the men experienced breast tenderness, and loss of sex drive.

The von Hippel-Lindau protein, vascular endothelial growth factor, and kidney cancer
Article Abstract:
An antibody against vascular endothelial growth factor may be effective in slowing the progression of kidney cancer. Most tumors must form new blood vessels in order to continue growing. Vascular endothelial growth factor is a substance involved in new blood vessel formation. Antibodies against this substance may keep a tumor from growing but will not cause the tumor to shrink.
