Blood spills: the evidence
Article Abstract:
Nurses face several health risks when using chlorine solutions to clean blood spills, despite the practice being instigated to help reduce the risk of blood-born infections. Research needs to be carried out into the scientific use of chlorine solutions for blood spills, with risk assessment also undertaken regarding risks imposed on nursing staff, such as respiratory and skin irritation problems.

Infection prevention is a legal requirement
Article Abstract:
There is a need to reduce avoidable infection in all areas of health and social care since it prevails in the health care institutions at different levels. Public concern led the Department of Health to announce a reduction target for MRSA bloodstream infections for acute NHS trusts, in addition to directing all NHS trusts to demonstrate year-on-year reductions in infection.

Clean hands: how to encourage good hygiene by patients
Article Abstract:
Advice on encouraging hand-washing in patients is presented. Patient hand wipes can be useful for patients who cannot easily reach a sink, but these must be routinely offered.
