Board and lodgings
Article Abstract:
UK nurses will have seats on primary care group management boards from Apr 1999. They will have new opportunities to make changes in health care policy due to the political commitment to involve them in local commissioning. However, experience suggests that, in practice, nurses will not become accepted as equal participants in decision-making and commissioning unless they acquire and practice the appropriate skills. These skills include organisational and political skills, and the ability to work with the forms of strategic planning which are appropriate to the new arrangements.

Tinkering is not enough
Article Abstract:
None of the solutions in the United Kingdom Conservative party's green paper entitled 'Developing Partnerships in Mental Health' will improve the administration of mental health services in Britain. Some believe that the green paper represents an attempt to remove responsibility from local government with the overall aim of privatising social services. The Labour party intends to consider the appropriateness of the 1983 Mental Health Act. A fundamental review of the entire health system is required before real progress can be made, however.

A proud record
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom Conservative party's health policy has benefitted nurses since its coming to power in 1979. It has succeeded in raising the profile of nursing in an increasingly professional environment. It has, contrary to Labour party claims, increased the number of qualified professional nursing staff by 55,000 over an 18-year period and will continue to support nursing staff in the future.
