Bottling up problems
Article Abstract:
The numbers of elderly people drinking over 21 units of alcohol per week increased from 12% for men and 3% for women in 1984 to 18% and 7% respectively by 1996. This trend is likely to continue because drinking is more common generally. The elderly drink because of boredom, loneliness or to deaden pain they are experiencing. Accidents happen when they combine alcohol with medication because many drugs are not meant to be taken with alcohol. The medical profession tends to overlook the incidence of alcohol problems in their elderly patients.

Article Abstract:
Spirituality is a difficult concept to define, and individuals have many different spiritual experiences, but the nursing profession should widen the debate on the subject. Spirituality includes the concept of transcendence, aspects of relationships and self-understanding, and the search for meaning. Individuals often have times of spiritual growth at significant life events, including childbirth. Nurses should be aware that the spiritual dimension is part of their relationships with all patients, not just those who are dying.
