Breaking the barrier
Article Abstract:
A nurse helped a sleepless patient through relaxation techniques. The nurse appreciated that although the patient was demanding and difficult she was also anxious. She had a long history of illness but lack of sleep was a major problem. Muscle stretching and relaxation had a calming influence and the patient slept after about 20 minutes. Sleep lasted only 3.5 hours but was beneficial to the patient.

Finding the key
Article Abstract:
The calming effect of music on a demented patient suffering from Alzheimer's disease is described. Although it might be impossible to communicate verbally, it should not be supposed that communication is impossible. Demented patients do have some insight and it is a question of finding a means of reaching the patient's awareness.

Dementia demystified
Article Abstract:
A knowledge of the genetic causes of Huntingdon's, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, all of which cause dementia, could help in the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases. Parkinson's and Alzheimer's both result from genetic and environmental factors, but Huntington's is attributed to the mutation of just one gene.
